A. An Apostille is an official government-issued certificate added to documents so that they can be recognised when presented in another country that is part of the Apostille Convention. It confirms the signature, seal or stamp on the document to be genuine, so that it will be accepted when presented outside of the UK.

Q. What is the Hague Convention?
A. The Hague Convention (Apostille Convention, or the Apostille Treaty) is an international treaty drafted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law. It specifies how a document issued in one of the signatory countries can be certified for legal purposes in all the other signatory states.
Q. How many countries participate in the Hague Treaty?
A. There are currently 83 countries that participate in the Hague Treaty.
Q. How do I legalise a document for use in a country that is not part of the Hague Treaty?
A. Documents that are to be used in a country that is not part of the Hague Treaty would need to be attested by the embassy or consulate of the country they are to be used in, we can assist you with this process.
Q. How long does it take to legalise a document through an Embassy?
A. The time it takes will vary for each embassy, as they each have their own rules and procedures for submitting documents. However, we will process all documents on an urgent basis to get the quickest possible turnaround for you.
Q. Can any document be legalised?
A. Any UK source document issued by a UK government department or authority (e.g. birth certificates, marriage certificates, Degree/Diploma certificates, Employer’s reference, HMRC letters, Court documents, Companies documents) can be legalised. A. The Hague treaty was ratified in 1899. The Hague Apostille convention was ratified in 1961.
Q. Can I get an apostille on a Company document?
A. Yes, we can provide you with an Apostille for most company documents, however they would normally need to be certified or notarised first before they can be apostilled. If you send us a scanned copy of your document we can check for you.
Q. Can a Power of attorney be Apostilled?
A. Yes, a Power of Attorney document can be Apostilled straight away if it has been witnessed by a solicitor or a notary, if it hasn’t then it would need to be certified or notarised first before it can be apostilled.
Q. What legal document do I need to get married abroad?
A. The documents you would need to get married abroad would vary depending on the country as each country has different requirements, but you would always need your birth certificate, a valid passport, deed poll proof of any name change or adoption certificate plus most likely a certificate of no impediment which has had an Apostille attached.
